Product description

Caprolactam is offered in two states:
  • solid: white, irregular flakes (crystalline caprolactam),
  • liquid: colourless clear liquid with no mechanical impurities (liquid caprolactam).
Caprolactam is a solid at 200C.
Caprolactam is a liquid above 700C.

Application and use

Caprolactam is used for the industrial manufacturing of solids and liquids, as a semi-finished product, as a monomer for the production of polyamide, polymers, thermoplastics, as a monomer for resins and thermosetting resins, as a plasticizer for polyamide, as a hide tanning agent, for enriching and impregnating, as an ingredient of paint, varnish and surface coatings, as a laboratory reagent, as an ingredient of paint, varnish and surface coatings for consumer uses.

Packing and transport

Crystalline caprolactam is packed in 25 kg polyethylene bags. Caprolactam bags are formed into loading units on 1350 x 1100 mm wooden pallets, secured against displacement and deformation with stretch foil.

Crystalline caprolactam should be transported in containers, covered railway cars or motor vehicles. Crystalline caprolactam in national freight may be transported in individual bags. Crystalline caprolactam should be transported by means which protect the packaging from exposure to moisture and damage.

Liquid caprolactam is packed in insulated stainless steel railway or truck cisterns, equipped with a system for heating caprolactam using heated water or low pressure steam. Liquid caprolactam is packed in an oxygen free atmosphere (nitrogen blanket). Liquid caprolactam must be transported in specially designed rail or truck cisterns, at temperatures between 750C and 950C, in a nitrogen atmosphere.

Caprolactam is not a dangerous product according to ADR, RID and  IMDG regulations. It should be transported according to road and rail freight regulations.

Crystalline caprolactam, packed as described above, should be stored in dry areas, away from flammable materials, strong oxidants and strong alkalis. Caprolactam should not be exposed to moisture and direct sunlight.

Liquid caprolactam should be stored in stainless steel or aluminium containers, at temperatures between 750C and 950C in a nitrogen atmosphere.
