Grupa Azoty Group company awarded a distinction in the Decarbonisation Initiatives Ranking

Grupa Azoty Puławy was among the winners of the second edition of the Decarbonisation Initiatives Ranking organised by the PTWP Group. The Ranking presents the most interesting, imaginative and effective initiatives to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The results were officially announced on April 25th 2022 during the European Economic Congress in Katowice. On behalf of the Grupa Azoty Group, the award was collected by Filip Grzegorczyk, Vice President of the Management Board of Grupa Azoty S.A. The Ranking leaders were selected by the Board of the ‘Green Index’ campaign, consisting of representatives of environmental protection institutions, organisations and experts.

This year’s award is yet another distinction for a Grupa Azoty Group company in the Decarbonisation Initiatives Ranking. Last year, an award was given for the upgrade of the Technical-Grade Nitric Acid production unit, which contributed to reducing emissions of the greenhouse gas nitrous oxide at Grupa Azoty S.A.

Grupa Azoty Puławy received a distinction for the R&D project “Development and implementation of advanced process controls (APC) for the ammonia unit.”  APC (Advanced Process Controls) comprise an advanced control system whose implementation has reduced the carbon footprint on a single ammonia production line by more than 20 kg of CO2 per tonne of ammonia.

“The solution we implemented at Puławy reduces the energy intensity of the process by reducing the consumption of the key feedstock, that is high-methane natural gas. It also enhances production safety and cuts GHG emissions. This project allows us to increase our competitive advantage and protect the environment by reducing CO2 emissions. The project is perfectly in line with the Grupa Azoty Group’s new strategy whose objectives include decarbonising and reducing emissions from the Group’s production units. I am glad that the efforts of the employees of our Puławy-based company were recognised in such an important ranking,” said Tomasz Hryniewicz, Vice President of the Grupa Azoty S.A. Management Board and President of the Grupa Azoty Puławy Management Board.

“On behalf of the Grupa Azoty Management Board, I would like to thank for the recognition of the APC system for the ammonia unit, implemented at the company forming part of the Grupa Azoty Group. Being awarded one of the top spots in the Decarbonisation Initiatives Ranking is not only a token of appreciation of the research and development efforts of Grupa Azoty Puławy, but also motivates and gives a strong incentive to all Grupa Azoty Group companies to follow suit,” said Filip Grzegorczyk, Vice President of the Management Board of Grupa Azoty S.A., during the award ceremony.

The benefits brought by the project justify the implementation of the APC system on the other eight ammonia production lines, which will help cut total CO2 emissions by more than 20,000 tonnes a year. In the future, Grupa Azoty Puławy intends to implement the APC system also in other technological processes.

The project was implemented as part of the “INNOCHEM” sectoral programme financed by the National Centre for Research and Development (Measure 1.2 of the Smart Growth Operational Programme – Sectoral R&D Programmes).

The Decarbonisation Initiatives Ranking is a part of ‘Green Index’, an extensive campaign run by the PTWP Group, publisher of the wnp.pl website, addressed to those who take an active part in the green transition of Poland’s economy.
