N-butyraldehyde is used as a raw material in production of alcohols (mono- and multi-hydroxide), acids, amines and esters. It is used in the production processes of plasticizers, pharmaceuticals, plant protection products, synthetic resins, odorising agents, solvents and various types of additives used in many industries (fillers, wetting agents, defoaming agents, improvers).

The substance has been registered as an intermediate product requiring isolated transportation, and, according to the REACH ordinance, may be used as a substance which is used up or applied solely for chemical processing in order to be converted into another substance.
