Grupa Azoty Group’s Oxoplast™ Segment launches new products and enhances its speciality plasticizers portfolio

Grupa Azoty ZAK S.A., a member of the Grupa Azoty Group, is transforming one of its key business segments. The Oxoplast™ Segment’s portfolio is being expanded to include new products: Oxofine™ TOTM – a speciality plasticizer, and Oxofine™ Poly2k – the first polymeric speciality plasticizer in the Group’s offering. In addition, all speciality plasticizers manufactured by Grupa Azoty ZAK S.A. will from now on be offered under the umbrella brand of Oxofine™.

After the change, Adoflex™ and Oxovilen™ will be rebranded as, respectively: Oxofine™ DOA and Oxofine™ DBT.

Production specialisation

Grupa Azoty ZAK S.A. has been manufacturing plasticizers since the 1950s. Over the decades, the Kędzierzyn-based company has been developing and enhancing its product range, working towards specialisation. Launching the Oxoviflex™ plasticizer unit in 2015 was a breakthrough moment for the company. The following years saw an increase in production capacities, to 65 thousand tonnes per year. Since then, the Grupa Azoty Group has been the EU’s largest producer of DOTP. Oxoviflex™ is currently the Oxoplast™ Segment’s flagship plasticizer and, together with the Oxofine™ speciality products, forms a complementary plasticizer portfolio.

‘In line with our strategy as well as the market and regulatory requirements, we are adding speciality plasticizers to the Grupa Azoty Group’s product portfolio. Our objective is to have in place solutions for the manufacture of products that are environmentally friendly and safe to human health, in keeping with the principles of sustainable development,’ said Tomasz Hinc, President of the Management Board of Grupa Azoty S.A.

In 2019, the company put in operation a speciality ester unit with an annual capacity of 10 thousand tonnes, adding new plasticizers to its product mix. As a result of the adopted strategy, the Oxoplast™ Segment’s portfolio has now been expanded to include new speciality products, i.e. Oxofine™ TOTM and Oxofine™ Poly2k – the first polymeric speciality plasticizer in the offering.

‘Oxofine™ is our response to customer expectations and conditions currently prevailing on the market. The plastic additives business keeps evolving, prompting manufacturers and customers alike to work closely together on developing innovative, speciality products. Our offering is being built in line with this trend,’ said Paweł Stańczyk, President of the Management Board of Grupa Azoty ZAK S.A.

Research and development

Grupa Azoty ZAK S.A. is constantly working on new products to be added to the Oxofine™ line in the future.

‘Extending the value chain towards speciality products in the Oxoplast™ Segment is of key importance to us. To this end, we are building a Research and Development Centre that will vastly facilitate the development of new technologies,’ explained Paweł Stańczyk.

The company already has an experimental plant where it works on the synthesis of new plasticizers and improvement of the existing manufacturing technologies.

Environmentally-friendly solutions

In addition to enhancing its product portfolio, Grupa Azoty ZAK S.A. is also upgrading its production facilities to higher environmental standards.

‘Already in 2022, our New Energy Concept will provide the Oxoplast™ Segment with energy generated with a carbon footprint meaningfully reduced, at times even to zero. In this way, our company and the products it manufactures help reduce CO2 emissions,’ said Piotr Matyja, Head of the Oxoplast™ Segment.

The New Energy Concept is an innovative alternative to the second phase of the company’s CHP plant project, which envisaged the construction of another coal-fired boiler. The concept is largely based on the use of process heat from chemical units to produce electricity and other energy carrriers.

All plasticizers manufactured by Grupa Azoty ZAK S.A. comply with the REACH requirements, are not subject to authorisation or to any legal restrictions related to their application and – given their safe profile – are not classified as hazardous substances under CLP.
