At the Mijanka port in Police, owned by Grupa Azoty, the unloading of an ammonia shipment from North Africa has been completed. This purchase of a key raw material for fertilizer production is part of cost optimization efforts in response to the rising costs of in-house ammonia production. Producing one ton of ammonia requires at least 950 m³ of natural gas, making its production increasingly expensive. Grupa Azoty's Police plant is home to Poland’s only ammonia transshipment terminal, which is continuously adapted to meet current and future supply demands. The project utilizing the Police port for ammonia imports is one of the initiatives within the AZOTY BUSINESS Program.
Due to rising ammonia production costs—driven by high gas prices and climate policy requirements for energy transition—fertilizer manufacturers are increasingly turning to imports to reduce costs and emissions.
Grupa Azoty plans to leverage its port infrastructure not only to lower production costs but also to play a key role in ammonia imports for the European Union, creating opportunities for a new business sector.
By integrating logistics within the Capital Group, special attention is given to available port facilities. The well-designed infrastructure in Police will serve as a logistics hub, offering access to all transport modes used in production activities. Currently, conceptual work is underway for expanding the ammonia terminal, including the construction of new storage tanks and expansion of railway infrastructure with loading stations. These improvements will streamline ammonia distribution within Grupa Azoty and to external companies interested in purchasing the raw material.
Grupa Azoty is the largest producer of ammonia in Poland and Central and Eastern Europe, with multiple production facilities. At the same time, it is one of the region’s largest consumers of ammonia, which remains a crucial raw material for fertilizer production.
